Why this initiative?

Access to bio-inputs — the most critical bottleneck in scaling Natural Farming

🔧

Limited technical backstopping

No troubleshooting support when BRCs face production issues

📋

No standardised training

Inconsistent guidance for BRC entrepreneurs across regions

📊

Weak market linkages

Uncertain early revenues affect sustainability

💰

Limited finance access

Difficulty accessing capital, technology and policy support

🔄

Fragmented learning

Knowledge silos across regions and organisations

This initiative builds a structured national support system, enabling BRCs to perform better as enterprises while remaining closely embedded in local farming systems and community economies.

What is this initiative?

The National BRC Support System is a collaborative effort to strengthen Bio-Input Resource Centres (BRCs) across India as viable, locally rooted enterprises that support the spread of Natural Farming.

The initiative brings together experienced organisations, practitioners, and knowledge institutions to build a common support ecosystem for BRC entrepreneurs.

🌱

Rather than promoting a single model, the initiative recognises the diversity of agro-ecological contexts and supports context-specific BRC models through shared frameworks and collective learning.

Who is this initiative for?

This initiative is designed for and implemented with multiple stakeholders:

👥
BRC Entrepreneurs

farmers, women's collectives, SHGs, FPOs and individuals running or aspiring to run BRCs

🏢
Resource Organisations (ROs)

experienced organisations that act as regional hubs for training, mentoring and support

🌱
Civil Society & Farmer Institutions

promoting Natural Farming and local enterprise ecosystems

🔬
Researchers & Practitioners

contributing knowledge, validation and innovation

🏛️
Public Institutions & Financial Agencies

engaging for policy convergence and enterprise support

Framework

The National BRC Support System is organised around a multi-level framework:

1. National Level

  • Common frameworks, training modules and standards
  • Knowledge synthesis, documentation and learning exchange
  • National registry and digital knowledge platform
  • Policy dialogue and institutional convergence

2. Regional / State Level
(Resource Organisations)

  • Model BRCs as demonstration and training centres
  • Capacity building for entrepreneurs and field trainers
  • On-field advisory and troubleshooting support
  • Market and ecosystem facilitation

3. Local Level
(BRC Enterprises)

  • Production and supply of bio-inputs
  • Farmer engagement and advisory services
  • Local market development and enterprise growth

BRC Presence Across India

Growing Nationwide Network

The National BRC Support System is building a comprehensive network of Bio-Input Resource Centres across India, with active presence in multiple states and regions.

Our Resource Organisations and BRC entrepreneurs are working at the grassroots level to make natural farming inputs accessible to farmers in diverse agro-ecological contexts.

Roadmap

The initiative follows a phased and learning-oriented approach:

Phase 1: Initiation & Alignment

Onboarding of Resource Organisations, agreement on roles, frameworks and reporting systems. Establishing foundational protocols and building consensus across all stakeholders for cohesive implementation.

Phase 2: Capacity Development

Training of RO teams, strengthening of model BRCs, and preparation of training and advisory systems. Building technical expertise and operational capabilities at all levels.

Phase 3: Implementation Support

Field-level trainings, mentoring of BRC entrepreneurs, and facilitation of enterprise operations and markets. Hands-on support for ground-level execution and business development.

Phase 4: Consolidation & Learning

Documentation of experiences, performance reviews, refinement of frameworks, and strengthening of institutional linkages. Capturing insights and iterating based on field realities.

Phase 5: Scale Readiness

Expanding coverage, enabling replication, and supporting integration with government and financial systems. Preparing the ecosystem for wider adoption and long-term sustainability.

The roadmap remains adaptive, evolving based on field learning and feedback from practitioners.

What makes this initiative different?

  • ✓ Focus on localised, small enterprises, not centralised input supply
  • ✓ Emphasis on learning, adaptation and diversity, not one fixed model
  • ✓ Strong role for experienced practitioners and institutions
  • ✓ Clear linkage between enterprise viability and agro-ecological transition
  • ✓ Designed to complement and strengthen public programmes, not replace them

The initiative is anchored by NCNF and WASSAN, with Resource Organisations playing a central role in field-level implementation.
